Mexico: Bacalar

Bacalar is a small village in Mexico where tourism has been developing for two years to discover its seven-color lagoon. Let's discover this place which is still preserved from mass tourism!

Arrival in Bacalar and Accommodation

Route

You have several possibilities to make the trip Tulum-Bacalar:

- by A.D.O first class bus company

- by A.D.O economy class bus company

- by the colectivos that is to say the mini-buses that the locals take daily to go to work or to go to a specific place.

We chose the last option because it is the most economical and we put exactly the same time of transport as A.D.O. The small drawback is that you have to wait until the mini bus is full, about 15 people, so we can hit the road. However, you never wait very long, 20 minutes maximum maximum. The other peculiarity of the collectivos is their stops anywhere on the road to make the passengers get off or on the contrary recover a person. Although the stops are frequent, it does not detract from the travel time, we arrived at the same time as the buses of other companies.

By taking the collectivos, you will be completely immersed in the Mexican atmosphere with the music that is present regularly and you will be surrounded by locals. Ezekiel and I were the only strangers in the minis-buses. Of course you are stared at by everyone but we must not lie, we too have observed them. Everyone lives, some are on their phones, others chat with each other, but the vast majority of Mexicans sleep in colectivos ... and so do we ...

This is another way of traveling, totally typical since you enter the daily life of Mexicans and I guarantee that your wallet will thank you too.

The exact route from Tulum to Bacalar is as follows:

- take the colectivo Tulum - Carillo Puerto

- In Carillo Puerto a taxi takes you in charge to bring you to the terminal where the colectivo for Bacalar takes the road. The driver of the previous colectivo paid the taxi directly. You have nothing to do.

- Take the Colectivo Carillo Puerto - Bacalar: the driver stays on the main road and you go down whenever you want.

Hostel and Camping las G

The campsite is full of colors, it makes the place very dynamic and we want to enter it. We are received by the owner who is very kind. She shows us our tent for two days, as well as the kitchen and toilets. Everything is fine! Nothing is missing except a good internet connection ...

The kitchen area

Sanitary

The campsite is located a few minutes from the lagoon (5 minutes walk maximum maximum) and the center. Perfect for shopping and getting to the Central Park.

It turned out that the tent was too small for us two. We told the owner who told me she would change everything thereafter. There would be no tent but a kind of dormitory.

Our tent and the lockers behind

Although there is this inconvenience, we have been very well received. The staff really seeks to get to know you and the owner. All are ready to help you.

The Bacalar Lagoon

Here is the reason why Mexicans and tourists come to this small town: its lagoon. Do you want to see her? There she is:

Regarding the temperature, be reassured, it is super good, you can return without difficulty.

Are there really seven different colors? To be honest, I did not count at all, I preferred to enjoy the view, the present moment;)

Fort San Felipe

In the center of the city is Fort San Felipe with its guns! It was built in 1733 to protect Bacalar from frequent pirate attacks. Yes, yes you read correctly, pirates!

Besides there is a museum dedicated to piracy!

Fort San Felipe

Watch out for the cannon!

Peckish

We told ourselves that we will eat locally but we made a small difference by eating hamburgers.

They were really good and they were cooked in the Mexican way! On one side, we ate local;) Everything is homemade! The service is perfect!

Restaurant sign

The restaurant is located in a street perpendicular to the main square where you have many Mexicans who accost you for dinner in this food court outdoors.

My great hamburger. A delight!

Street art

Last year Bacalar took part in a street art competition. Today, we were able to enjoy the drawings!

In the middle of the streets, you can glimpse some houses a little atypical:

A houses with characters at its entrance. There was another one with frogs!

A little more traditional house

To conclude

We really enjoyed Bacalar for its beautiful lagoon. There are also cenotes to visit nearby but we chose to focus only on the main one.
